Nokia 7900 Prism with changing backlight colors

The 7900 Prism sports quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and dual-band WCDMA (850/2100MHz) support, though I was only able to test the GSM portion. I found the reception, again, to be high quality, which is typical for Nokia’s handsets. Sound quality through the handset’s earpeice is superb, though the speakerphone’s location on the back of the handset was a bit odd. The microphone is great at picking up your voice, and the 7900 Prism features Voice Clarity, which helps to increase the sound quality by digitally filtering out background noise. The user can toggle this function on and off as desired. I tested it in numerous locations and discerned only a slight difference from its use.

The Nokia 7900 Prism is compatible with Nokia’s free PC Suite software, which makes it extremely simple to synchronize your phone’s contacts, calendar, photos, videos, and to-dos with your PC. PC Suite is currently only compatible with Windows based computers. The 7900 can connect using the supplied micro-USB cable or via Bluetooth. The handset also supports File Transfer mode, which connects to the computer as a USB flash drive, making it simple to transfer files manually.

The contacts application on the 7900 Prism is extremely robust, with over 15 different pieces of information, such as birthday, formal name, nickname, and other small tidbits available to store. The 7900 Prism also supports photo and video caller ID, and allows you to easily record or set a different photo/video for each caller. Speed dial is also easily set, with numbers 2-9 available for use, as 1 is hard-programmed to access voicemail. Simply press and hold the appropriate number for a few seconds from the home screen to to activate the speed dial.

A long press on the # key will toggle the 7900 Prism’s ‘Silent’ profile, and the handset supports both pre-programmed and user-created profiles for ringtones, volume, and other pertinent settings. Speaker-independent voice dialing is also supported, though the user is forced to complete a short training procedure before it can be used. Even after completing the training procedure, though, I didn’t find the voice recognition to be very accurate.

The Nokia 7900 supports SMS, MMS, and email (POP/IMAP/SMTP). SMS and MMS are delivered to a unified inbox, while each email account has its own inbox. Instant messaging is supported through the Wireless Village protocol, which is not widely used, so I was unable to test this. Creating an SMS or MMS is simple, and the handset automatically determines the type of message based on any media attachments, which is very handy. The handset also keeps a list of the most recently used contacts, and allows you to set favorites to easily compose a message.

Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support is included on the 7900 Prism, and I found it very simple to connect with and use various headsets. Although the Bluetooth menu is somewhat hidden in Settings, Connectivity, Bluetooth, it is simple, from there, to setup a new pairing. Using the Invisio G5 and the Nokia BH-501 headsets, I was able to have great sound quality, though the music cut out on the Nokia BH-501s if I got more than a couple feet away from the handset. The 7900 Prism is equipped with EDGE and UMTS for mobile data, though I was only able to test the EDGE connection. The browser is very capable, and this cell phone also came with Opera Mini pre-installed, which I found to be very convenient.

Nokia advertises a standby battery life of 10 days, with only 3 hours of continuous talk time. In my tests, I found that even with a few hours of music playing via Bluetooth and moderate web browsing and other usage, I was easily able to make it through 1.5 days on a full charge. With light usage, the 7900 Prism might be able to last through a weekend, but I would probably bring a charger along, just in case.
